The Minister for Planning, the Hon. Matthew Guy has released the report of the Ports and Environs Advisory Committee, outlining new planning controls for the ports of Melbourne, Hastings, Geelong and Portland.

The planning controls aim to better protect the operation and expansion of the ports as well as the amenity of residents and workers in nearby areas.

One of the key recommendations to be implemented will be to invoke a Port Zone as a means to ensure that the interests of the port and the port’s significance are specifically recognised and emphasised.

Another planning control will see the introduction of a Ministerial Direction to prevent the encroachment of sensitive land uses near the ports.

Further planning measures to account for the recently announced expansion of Webb Dock will be developed by the Department of Planning and Community Development in conjunction of the Port of Melbourne Corporation.
