The Property Council of Australia (ACT) welcomes the passing of the Heritage Bill 2004 last night by the Legislative Assembly.
“This Legislation was a long time in the making, said Romilly Madew, Executive Director, Property Council of Australia – ACT Division, “we are happy with the final outcome.
“The current system was timely and costly, causing uncertainty within the industry.
“The Property Council has been working closely with the Heritage Unit and Heritage Council over the past few months in an endeavour to develop a Bill that created certainty, was integrated with the Land Act and resolved the issue of appeal rights.
“The final Bill and amendments went some way to finding a balance between the differing views of government, the property industry and community – this was no mean feat.
“Following substantial amendments made at the eleventh hour with the help of our members and industry, the Property Council supported the bill.
“There are still some outstanding issues that industry and the Heritage Unit is keen to work through in the following months.
“The open consultation process used by the Heritage Unit should be considered as an example by other government agencies when working with industry, said Ms Madew.
“The process used created an improved working relationship with Heritage Unit and industry as well as creating a growing awareness of Heritage issues within industry.
