The Property Council of Australia has welcomed State Government’s decision to amend state planning regulations to accommodate the demand for childcare centres in the CBD.
Property Council Queensland executive director Robert Walker said that inner city childcare centres needed more flexible standards to reflect the impact of available land, outdoor space, noise and air quality issues.
“With over 5,000 people living in the CBD, the provision of childcare is another one of those modern elements of social infrastructure which will make the city a successful residential community,” Mr Walker said.
“Cabinet’s amendment goes a long way toward providing the required flexibility and industry welcomes that.
Mr Walker added that childcare centres are an essential element of the social infrastructure required by today’s mix of CBD uses.
“The Brisbane CBD of today is a place where people work, live and recreate, and the government must start to provide for these multiple uses to benefit the community,” he said.
“We congratulate the Government, especially Ministers Pitt and Boyle, for ensuring that Department and state planning regulations respond to the dynamic needs of the CBD.”
