The rule of law is at last coming to the building industry, with the passage of the Building and Construction Industry Improvement Bill through the Senate today.

Peter Verwer, Chief Executive of the Property Council of Australia, welcomed the new legislation as a significant milestone in the reform of the construction industry:

“This Bill will deliver postive reforms to the property and construction industries, which will increase GDP, create more jobs, and stimulate investment,” Mr Verwer said.

The Property Council welcomes the creation of the new Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) and the Federal Safety Commissioner, both of which were key recommendations of the Cole Royal Commission.

“The new legislation changes the workplace relations institutions of the construction sector.

“The ABCC will help apply the rule of law to an industry that has often operated at the edge of civil society,” Mr Verwer said.
