At the Property Council of Australia’s Annual Downtown Premier’s Luncheon, the Hon Anna Bligh MP – Premier and Minister for Reconstruction announced that the newly established Major Projects Office (MPO) would be accepting applications from today (25 August 2011).
The MPO is a State Government office, designed to streamline the approval of major projects that offer a significant benefit to the Queensland economy.
The MPO was an idea developed by the Property Council and Shopping Centre Council through the infrastructure charges reform process which the government is now delivering in consultation with industry.
In her address the Premier stressed the importance of close collaboration with industry in delivering initiatives like the MPO. In particular she highlighted a number of initiatives which had been developed and delivered as a result of relationship between the Government and the Property Council.
These included the Urban Land Development Authority (UDLA), land valuation reforms, the Growth Summit, Building Revival Forum and the Queensland Building Boost.
The Premier’s announcement was followed by a formal statement by Deputy Premier Paul Lucas outlining key features of the MPO.
Queensland Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia Kathy Mac Dermott said the MPO was an important initiative by the State Government which had strong support from industry.
“In the lead up to the State Budget the Property Council strongly advocated for the establishment of a Major Projects Office to unlock billions of dollars of shovel-ready, significant developments currently stymied by a quagmire of planning and development assessment processes,” Ms Mac Dermott said.
“Unlocking investment in Queensland’s property sector is a critical component in achieving Queensland’s economic recovery.
The Property Council would like to urge any members who have a project that meets the criteria to contact the MPO as soon as possible to ensure they are considered. The nomination form can be found on the MPO’s website; www.dlgp.qld.gov.au/mpo.
The Property Council would like to thank the Premier for her address and also thank our major sponsor Rider Levett Bucknall for their continued support.
