The Property Council of Australia welcomes the commitment by the federal Government to fund 50 per cent of the initial costs of the proposed Perth-Bunbury Highway ahead of construction later this year.
Joe Lenzo, Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia, WA Division, stressed the imperatives of this project for Western Australia and its strategic importance for the region.
"The Perth-Bunbury highway was one of the most important infrastructure projects proposed for Western Australia.
"The Property Council's South-West chapter has told us that the highway is necessary to sustain the remarkable growth in the region's property markets.
"The on-again/off-again Bunbury-Peel highway is a flashpoint for community dissatisfaction in the South-West. The traffic congestion in the south-west is not only affecting commercial and holiday traffic. Bunbury residents commuting to their suburban homes have to share domestic roads with the growing intra-State traffic, which is unacceptable.
"A growing number of proposed major property developments are relying heavily on the construction of the Perth-Bunbury Highway.
"These projects will add significantly to economic growth in the South-West.
"The industry wants to see real work happening on the highway this year," said Mr. Lenzo.
