The Independent Local Government Review Panel has released a Consultation Paper on local government reform. The Paper asks for comment on key issues, including infrastructure delivery, financial stability of councils and boundary changes. To read the Paper, click here.
The Property Council has been a long-time supporter of reforms to improve the financial sustainability of councils, renew infrastructure, promote resource sharing and amalgamate councils. We do not advocate a diminished role for local government. Rather, we seek a stronger and more effective local government sector that is better able to deal with the challenges of the future.
The release of the Consultation Paper fits into a broader review of local government that started with the Destination 2036 process, and has led to the release of an Action Plan. In addition, the Local Government Minister has also announced a review of the Local Government Act, expected to get underway next year.
The Property Council has created a Local Government Reform Task Force to engage with the reform process. We will make a submission on the Consultation Paper. If you would like to contribute to the submission, please contact epalmisano@propertyoz.com.au. Submissions are due 14 September.
