Industry strongly supports the Commonwealth’s role in strategic planning for the ACT and promoting Canberra, to ensure a strong and sustainable national capital.

Industry believes reforms are needed to enable the NCA and ACT Government agencies involved in planning matters to work together more effectively at all levels. This includes strategic planning and individual projects where both levels of government have a legitimate interest.

Canberra’s industry groups and professional associations endorse a cooperative and integrated approach to strategic planning for the national capital which takes into account national, local and regional interests, and which provides a clear basis for critical infrastructure investments including a much improved public transport system and a supportive pattern of land use.

Industry recommends that an open and transparent review be undertaken by the Commonwealth and Territory governments, in consultation with the community and stakeholders to:

  • examine if there is duplication of planning roles and responsibilities between the NCA and the ACT Government and, if so, evaluate where responsibilities should reside;
  • assess whether some aspects of the National Capital Plan should be the responsibility of the Territory; and
  • evaluate the NCA’s role and resource requirements in light of any revisions to the National Capital Plan and other agency functions including promotion of the national capital.
