Earth Hour 2012 takes place at the end of this month at 8.30pm on Saturday 31 March. The theme for Earth Hour this year is ‘Uniting People to Protect the Planet’.

For the last three years, Canberra has had the highest participation rate of any Australian capital city and we want to repeat that success. In 2010, 52 percent of the ACT population participated in Earth Hour.

It has also brought about real results. In 2011, it reportedly led to an 8 percent reduction in the amount of electricity used in Canberra during Earth Hour, and a reduction of 26.93 tonnes in the amount of greenhouse gas emissions.

The Property Council is an official supporter of Earth Hour in the ACT and we are asking our members to participate. We appreciate that for many of you the seemingly simple act of turning off lights for Earth Hour can be quite a process so we encourage you to undertake a trial run before the event to work out any issues.

This is also an opportunity for you to either start or re-energise efforts to make long-term commitments to taking action on climate change, in line with this year’s theme of ‘Uniting People to Protect the Planet’.

We are also asking you to officially register your participation through the Earth Hour website. The website has a range of information on how you can support the event including logo and poster downloads.

With climate change a big issue for most of us, showing your support for Earth Hour will signal to staff, colleagues and clients that you are committed to addressing this issue.
