The Retail Trading Hours Amendment Bill, the Bill allowing Sunday trading (from 11am to 5pm) throughout the Perth metropolitan area, passed the Western Australian Legislative Council today, having been supported by both major parties.

The Bill had already been passed by the Legislative Assembly. Labor moved two amendments to the Bill; one seeking to add Easter Sunday to the list of days (Christmas Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day) on which the Minister is not permitted to allow public holiday trading. (the Bill allows the Minister to grant large shops permission to trade on other public holidays).

The amendments were defeated.

The Government is expected to make an announcement soon regarding the date on which universal Sunday trading will begin in Perth.
