BrightFarms Inc. and Salmar Properties LLC will together build the hydroponic greenhouse on Liberty View Industrial Plaza, an 8-storey 102,193 sqm warehouse located in the Sunset Park industrial precinct of Brooklyn, New York.
Salmar Properties LLC is redeveloping Liberty View Industrial Plaza as part of an urban industrial redevelopment project backed by New York City. Salmar will convert the presently unutilised building into a light manufacturing facility.
The rooftop design by BrightFarms is incorporated into the renovation. BrightFarms grows local produce across the US. It finances, builds, and manages greenhouse farms at or near grocery retailers.
“The partnership between BrightFarms and Salmar Properties to build the world’s largest rooftop farm is an exciting new model for sustainable, urban agriculture,” says New York City Council Speaker, Christine Quinn.
Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Borough President, says the partnership and zoning initiative set an example on how to embrace urban agriculture.
The farm will create jobs and grow more than 400,000 kgs of produce per year, which BrightFarms says is enough fresh produce for around 5,000 people.
