Building Better Regional Cities announced by the current government, will invest $200 million to help build up to 15,000 affordable homes in regional cities over three years and will relieve pressure on our major capital cities, so that Australia can grow sustainably.

Building Better Regional Cities will enable councils to fast track existing plans to build housing.

These projects also have the added advantage of bringing much-needed housing supply to the marketplace.

Modelled on the Housing Affordability Fund (HAF) which ties funding dollars to performance outcomes this fund will build on the provision of forward-linking infrastructure has the ability to remove costs that would otherwise keep the development from occurring.

There will also be no net impact on the budget.

Mayors of 46 cities outside state and territory capitals will be invited to participate in the program which can be done in conjunction with the private sector.

Councils will need to show there is land available for housing, community support for new development and strong expected jobs growth.

Council plans will also have to demonstrate a commitment to good urban design, environmental improvements and planning best practice.

The Residential Development Council (RDC) welcomes cities being the focus of the election and welcomes this first major policy announcement which was has been directed to delivering infrastructure to cities.

Australia needs long-term strategic planning that secures the strong economic growth that will fund sustainable communities that are greener, more vibrant and liveable.

All parties should provide their cities and infrastructure polices forward as part of their election campaign.
